Frequently Asked Questions

Q 2. Choose Your Charging Point

A

There’s a wide variety of charging point options on the market, and it’s important to review your options thoroughly before you settle on the EV charger you’re going to install.

Some of the key variables you should try to consider include:

Charging Rate:

Think about how quickly you’d like to charge your vehicle and look for charging points that meet your needs. Keep in mind that the charging rate also depends on your car’s capacity. For example, if your vehicle has an 11kW charging limit, installing a point with a higher output won’t provide any additional benefit.

Power Supply:

Your home’s power supply plays a big role in determining the maximum charging rate available. In most UK homes, the standard supply can support a charging rate of up to 7kW, which is ideal for overnight charging.

Tethered or Untethered:

Tethered charging points come with a built-in cable, offering added convenience as you don’t need to connect your own. However, they aren’t compatible with all EVs, so check that your vehicle is suitable. Untethered chargers give you the flexibility to use your own cable, making them a versatile choice.

Cost:

EV charging points come in a variety of price ranges, typically increasing with their charging capacity. If you’re a landlord or tenant, you might qualify for a government grant that can offset some of the cost, making the installation more affordable.
