Launched and on sale from 2014, the exciting BMW i8 was a groundbreaking model; a luxury sports car that drew comparisons with Porsche’s iconic 911, but that was powered by a petrol engine, supported by an electric motor. Take a look at a used BMW i8 and it’s impossible not to be impressed by the sleek exterior and sensational design, typified by the front dihedral-style doors. Instead of opening out, like standard car doors, in the BMW i8 they swing up to allow access for driver and passengers.

Can the i8 back up its looks with performance? Yes, it can. The used BMW i8 is fitted with a six-speed automatic transmission and its 1.5 litre petrol hybrid delivers an impressive 362-374bhp. Acceleration is fast, clocking 0-62mph in 4.4 seconds, and feels almost instant thanks to the electric motor. Top speed is up to 155mph.

Give some thought to whether it’s the right type of BMW for you, and whether it matches your driving habits. If you want a sporty Coupé or Roadster, then it’s a strong contender. If you prefer something larger, then probably not.

There are more practical alternatives. The used BMW i8 is a two-door car and while, inside, the headroom and legroom in the front is generous enough, it’s more compact by design in the rear. The i8 can seat four people, but in the back two adults might be a bit of squeeze. Two child passengers though? Not a problem. This only applies to the Coupé, of course. In the Roadster, there are no rear seats.

The boot provides more room than you might think at first glance, with a capacity of 154 litres.

BMW based the construction of the i8 on a lightweight concept called LifeDrive architecture. This features an aluminium chassis (the Drive module) and a passenger compartment made from carbon-fibre (the Life module). This is both high-strength and ultra-light.

A choice of driving modes means the i8 can be powered by the petrol engine (Sport mode) or exclusively by the electric battery (Comfort, Eco Pro). Using the latter obviously cuts running costs right down. The battery range is up to 34 miles, so sufficient for shorter trips.

While an older used BMW i8 for sale can represent great value, often available at under £40k, newer models from 2018 onwards have a larger battery capacity, more power, and that Roadster option for open-air cruising.
