The X1 may be the entry level model in the prestigious BMW SUV line-up, but it offers a great all-round driving experience and, for a vehicle in the compact class, the interior is spacious and accommodating.

A used BMW X1 offers sprightly performance for an SUV, and the handling is responsive. In newer generation X1s, certain model trims achieve 0-62mph in around 7.1 seconds and the 2.0 litre engines mean there’s no shortage of power.

Fuel economy varies by model type; some diesel cars have a combined fuel consumption in excess of 56mpg, so running costs may be refreshingly low. The interior is comfortable – with padded sports seats in some models – and smartly designed. The X1 is a five-door SUV which provides plenty of headroom and legroom for passengers.

The boot capacity is impressive, at 540 litres, and if you need more space, the back seats can fold down to increase that capacity further still. In fact, the clever sliding bench configuration enables you to adapt the area according to whether you need more space for passengers, or more boot capacity.

Standard specification includes sat nav, parking sensors, and cruise control. The technology, especially in newer BMW X1 used cars, is one of the highlights of this model with several driver assistance and safety functions. The infotainment touchscreen can also be controlled from the centre console. Apple CarPlay is standard, with Android Auto as an option; some used BMW X1 models will have it.

If you’ve decided to buy a used BMW X1, first of all – great choice. Secondly, you’ll need to decide which type of X1 to choose.

In the approved used BMW X1 range, you will find the BMW X1 (F48) model which was on sale between 2016 - 2022, and the all-new BMW X1 (U11) which has been on sale since 2022.

Explore the range of used BMW X1 models for sale and there will be a selection of cars in different trims and engines. The X1 is available with 1.5L and 2.0L petrol engines, two diesel engines – both 2.0L – with the newer BMW X1 (U11) models featuring mild hybrid technology. There’s a petrol plug-in hybrid engine, too, and now an all electric model – the iX1. A used BMW X1 is available with both manual and automatic transmission (subject to engine variant).

Performance varies slightly across the range and the seven different powertrains available. The plug-in hybrid xDrive 30e has 0-62mph acceleration in 5.6 seconds, while if you prioritise fuel economy, a diesel X1 might suit better. The 18d sDrive, for example, has a combined fuel consumption of up to 57.6 MPG.

Buyers of used BMW X1 cars also have a choice of trims. There are four trim levels available – SE (F48 only), Sport, xLine and M Sport. The SE is the entry level model and is equipped to a good standard, with features such as climate control, cruise control and LED headlights.

The Sport trim adds sports seats, ambient lighting and dashboard styling, while the xLine has leather seating upholstery and front and rear bumper protection. The M Sport tops the range, providing an M Sport leather steering wheel, heated front sport seats and aerodynamic body styling.

Regardless of trim, a used BMW X1 comes with a great level of standard spec, including alloy wheels, electric mirrors, parking sensors, and Sat Nav.
