The BMW M8 is astonishingly fast. Because the M8 now comes in the Competition trim — which until recent years has always been available as an upgrade to the base model version — it’s especially potent.

Fitted with a thumping 4.4-litre twin-turbocharged V8 petrol engine, it’s capable of 750 Nm of torque, and a monstrous 625hp. The M8’s 0-62mph acceleration time is a lively 3.2 seconds, aided by the smooth 8-speed automatic transmission. With adaptive suspension on the standard spec list, a BMW M8 used car is an absolute thrill to drive, especially when you have the opportunity to really open it up on a track day.

It’s not just about raw pace and power, though. You can change the characteristics of the engine depending on road and driving conditions. Switch between driving modes including Efficient, for the most economical performance, Sport, and even Sport-Plus, which is the high-performance mode, creating an intense, racetrack-influenced engine sound to add to the enjoyment.

Steering and brakes can also be configured to choice, too, with Comfort — best for long-distance cruising – and Sport available. Drivers can also flex between BMW’s four-wheel drive system – xDrive all-wheel drive – to 4WD Sport or 2WD, which is rear-wheel drive only.

Exterior design elements include features such as a high-gloss rear spoiler, M light alloy wheels, M front and rear apron, and M Sport twin exhaust system. Inside, you’ll discover a high quality cabin that houses a multitude of interactive tech and BMW’s superb infotainment system.

The M-Dynamic menu system means you can preset driving modes, the stiffness of the suspension, and brake response. The infotainment system can be operated however you choose – by voice-activated personal assistant, buttons on the steering wheel, gesture control or touchscreen.

Driver and passenger comfort has clearly been a priority when designing the interior of a used BMW M8. The quality is excellent, with highlights that — depending on the model you choose — can include Merino leather seats, front and rear heated seats, electric memory seat function and M Sport leather multifunction steering wheel equipped with gearshift paddles.

Though this is a two-door model, there are back seats but these are best accommodated for shorter journeys rather than long road trips. The M8 is better suited for two people, so if you need a bigger model, we’d again guide you in the direction of the Gran Coupé. The M8’s boot space is very respectful at 420 litres — which is only 20 litres fewer than the Gran Coupé.

With the M8, as with every used BMW model, there are decisions to make before picking your perfect car. There may be variations when comparing cars, as previous owners may have chosen to buy option packs from new. Make sure you check the features list with every BMW M8 used model you view, so you know exactly what’s included with each car and can make an informed decision.

The standard features on every M8 are extensive and impressive, but the option packs available include the M Pro Pack, which has M Carbon Ceramic Brakes with Gold Calipers; BMW says this provides ‘exceptional responsiveness’.

There’s also the M Driver’s Pack – which increases the M8’s top speed from 155mph to 190mph – the Comfort Plus Pack, with its Heat Comfort System and Ventilated Front Seats, and the Technology Plus Pack.

This contains the Driving Assistant Professional package, which has a series of additional driver assistance functions, including steering and lane control assistant, lane departure warning, active cruise control and rear collision prevention. The Technology Plus Pack also provides a Bower & Wilkins Diamond Surround Sound Audio System, though the standard Harman Kardon Surround Sound System is excellent, too.

The M Carbon Pack includes M Carbon engine cover and M Carbon Exterior Package (mirror caps, M Carbon rear spoiler, rear diffuser insert in Carbon), while the Visibility Pack has BMW Individual Lights Shadow Line and Laserlights.

If you find a used BMW M8 with the Ultimate Pack fitted, that covers 11 packs of additional features, making it the top spec available.

The main consideration with a used BMW M8 is which body style to go for – the Convertible or the Coupé. There’s very little to differentiate between the two. The Coupé is marginally faster, at 0-62mph in 3.2 seconds compared to 3.3 seconds, but that’s not even a blink of the eye.

The Coupé provides a bigger boot space, with its 420 litres compared to the Convertible’s 350 litres. It may just come down to whether you want the versatility of being able to drive with the top down when the sun’s out. The soft-top roof is controlled electronically, taking just 15 seconds to open and close, and is operational even when driving at speeds up to 31 mph.
