Used Land Rover Defender 90 Cars For Sale

Dating back to 1983, the Land Rover Defender is one of the most capable and unstoppable 4x4s on the market. The Defender 90, launched in 1984, is the short-wheelbase version of the original icon, offering three-door practicality and plenty of interior space for all thanks to its boxy design.

As a family car with a love of adventure, the Defender name tag was revived in 2020, following a pause in production in 2016. The Defender 90 returned with a revamp that included higher ground clearance and reinforced suspension. Dubbed ‘the most capable Land Rover ever made’, the Defender 90 is confident, stylish, and has a worldwide reputation for conquering the globe’s most inhospitable terrain.

If you love to push boundaries and live life to the full, the Defender 90 is the ultimate companion. It’s powered by a range of exciting engines including the small but mighty P300 - a four-cylinder turbocharged 2.0-litre unit that delivers 296 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque. It’s capable of reaching 0-60mph in just 6.7 seconds.

There’s also the P400, a six-cylinder Mild-Hybrid Electric Vehicle (MHEV) powertrain that captures energy typically lost during deceleration and uses this to deliver a more efficient performance. In 2021, the supercharged 5.0-litre V8 was also added to the range, producing 525bhp and 625Nm of torque. It powers the Defender 90 from 0-62mph in just 5.4 seconds and reaches top speeds of 149mph.

As for appearance, the Land Rover Defender is instantly recognisable due to its angular design that doesn’t shy too far from the 80s icon. With large alloys, roof rails, Matrix LED headlights, privacy glass, and striking body colours including Santorini Black, this is a car that wants to be noticed. Whether you’re gliding down the motorway or going off-track, you can do so in style.

Step inside and discover an equally attractive interior that’s well-organised, robust and spacious. Thanks to an innovative front central jump seat, the new Defender 90 even has room for six people – more than most family cars. Select models also get heated and cooled front seats, three-zone climate control, and ambient interior lighting which makes it easy to sit back and relax in comfort.

Technology is also a highlight, with newer models of the Defender 90 offering ClearView Ground View technology which allows drivers to see the areas usually hidden by the bonnet. This image is then displayed on a new 10-inch infotainment screen which also provides access to satellite-navigation and smartphone connectivity in the form of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. A 12.3-inch interactive driver display also sits behind the steering wheel presenting useful information.

Knowing which Land Rover to buy can be tricky as there are so many capable models on the market. The Land Rover Defender 90 stands out from the crowd due to its short body which is perfect for those who love to go where others can’t.

Short front and rear overhangs mean the Defender 90 can tackle steep hills and treacherous terrain with ease while ClearView Ground View technology makes it easy to monitor the landscape you’re covering via the 10-inch information touchscreen. While the Defender 90 is smaller than other models such as the 110, its compact dimensions make it quick, nimble, and agile enough to confront challenges.

The 291mm of ground clearance offered by the Defender 90 and the new Wade programme in the Terrain Response system makes it much easier to cross water of up to 900mm in depth too. So, think about the routes you’re likely to travel while making your decision.

The Defender 90 can also tow up to 3,500 kg, with the Configurable Terrain Response system allowing you to adjust the vehicle setup to match the demands and conditions of your journey. So if it’s an intrepid traveller you’re looking for, the Defender 90 is sure to delight.

One thing to keep in mind during the buying process is that the Defender 90 is not compatible with the plug-in hybrid powertrain offered in the Defender 110. This combines a 2.0-litre four cylinder petrol with a 105kW electric motor and is only available in the longer wheelbase model.
