What’s new on the new Porsche Macan?

When a new model is released, you can be forgiven for taking a moment to spot what is new on a facelifted Porsche. Not every generation has groundbreaking changes to the shape of the car, as Porsche adheres to Porsche DNA when designing the models.

What you will notice though, are impressive and specific differences in the performance, comfort and style of the latest model from the Porsche range. The new Macan has now been released, so we want to take you through the changes big and small to the newest generation of the Porsche SUV.

History of the Macan

The Macan made its first appearance in the market in 2014 and went on to outsell even the iconic 911 3-to-1 in 2017. The popular Porsche SUV was originally nicknamed the “Cajun” which is a cross between the words Cayenne and Junior, but the Macan has now come to be seen as a large 911 instead of a small Cayenne. The SUV is attracting new clients to the brand and it is estimated that 80 per cent of all Macan buyers are new Porsche customers.

More than 600,000 Macan’s have been delivered worldwide which is why it was unsurprising that in 2020, the Porsche Macan S was crowned ‘Best Sports SUV’ at the annual What Car? Car of the Year Awards.

The Macan has a fantastic reputation for being powerful, dynamic, sporty and fun to drive, which was echoed at the WhatCar? Awards with the judging panel’s comments; “the Macan S is more enjoyable than its rivals on the road, thanks to super-accurate steering, tightly-controlled body movements and a wonderfully balanced feel.”

As Porsche strives to deliver excellence, they have continually improved the Macan with model upgrades or “facelifts” in 2016, 2019 and now 2021. With the latest update to the Macan, Porsche has included some fantastic upgrades; the refreshed style to the exterior design, new operating concept and improved performance.

The range starts from £47,780 for the entry level Macan model. This update has delivered the Macan S and Macan GTS variants too, but no doubt the Turbo derivative will be sure to follow as the most powerful in the range.

Exterior Design

The first change from the last Macan you might notice is the new 3D structure on the redesigned nose and the rounded off rear of the newest model. The inlay in the exterior colour enhances the look of the Macan from the front, and the diffuser has a more striking design at the back.

The larger wheels are also a key new feature and there are seven new wheel designs available. The Macan has 19 inch alloy wheels, the Macan S has 20 inch and the Macan GTS has 21 inch as standard. Another upgrade to the Macan is that the Porsche Dynamic Light System (PDLS) and Sport Design exterior mirrors are now standard on all new Macan models.

The new line also comes with 2 new exterior colours for the entry and S lines of Papaya Metallic and Gentian Blue Metallic, and there is now an option for Python Green for the GTS with the GTS Sport package.

Interior Design

Stepping into a new Macan will feel like a different place to the previous version. The interior has had substantial changes which have contributed to a modern and elegant overall look and feel of the cabin. A new operating concept works alongside the 10.9-inch full HD touch display screen, with more touch surfaces instead of push buttons.

In the centre of the cockpit there is a shorter selector lever which is also new with this Macan and an analogue clock now comes as standard. To mirror the new choice of colours available on the exterior of the car, there are also a selection of new leather and stitching options including Gentian Blue, Papaya and Crayon.

Performance

All three available versions come with significantly more power than their predecessors. The Macan has a power output of 265 PS thanks to a newly developed and turbocharged four-cylinder engine.

The Macan S has a starting price of £53,300 and is now also equipped with a 2.9-litre V6 biturbo that produces 380 PS. This means the Macan S is 26 PS more powerful than the previous model. The same engine sits in the Macan GTS but with 60 PS more power and a total power output of 440 PS.

Macan GTS

Porsche have made improvements to the chassis of the Macan and the Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM), which is standard on the Macan GTS, has been re-adapted specifically for the Macan. Also standard on the GTS is the sports air suspension allowing the body of the car to be lowered by 10 millimetres for extra dynamism when driving. The GTS model line starts from £64,770, but there are some options you may want to consider to get the most from your Porsche.

To further optimise the dynamic performance of the Macan GTS, you can also opt for the GTS Sport package. Alongside the suspension, 21-inch GT design wheels with performance tyres, Porsche Torque Vectoring Plus (PTV Plus) and the Sport Chrono package further increase the dynamic potential of the Macan GTS. On the inside of the GTS with GTS Sport package, you would also benefit from 18-way adjustable sports seats, Carbon interior package, Race-Tex upholstery and contrast stitching in Python Green.
